Would a print company do it?

Is it against copyright laws or because it is just for my son would it be o.k? Can anyone suggest where I could get a high resolution image file of Ben 10 to send to a print company?

A few suggestions

It’s “against copyright laws” (actually it counts as fair use if it’s for your son’s wall but a print company can’t do it). If I were you I would get an image of the Ben 10 character, draw a grid on it, draw a larger grid on your son’s wall and paint it.

Commercial printing companies will not print copyrighted work without receiving a release from the registered owner.

However, if you were to create your own - Wall Poster - for example, some places like Office Depot now have a printer that you can use to have them print a poster size copy of your file. (a file you would have on a CD or USB Memory stick for example) However, this process is VERY EXPENSIVE!

The issue is that YOU can create and have such an image for yours or your son’s personal use, but, a print company would be in violation of copyright laws to charge your for creating the print.

It’s not that you can’t find someone willing to do it, but if THEY were to get caught, they risk losing a LOT of money when they get sued.

Here’s a link to the copyright laws. For your particular purposes, pay close attention to the “Fair Use” doctrines.

http://www.copyright.gov.

If you decide to tackle the print job yourself, it can be done with a feature called “tileing” which should be found on your printer’s driver, or perhaps as part of whatever graphics program you run. This allows you to print a portion of the image on a single sheet of paper that you can assemble into the larger picture.

Your problem will be in finding a hi res image. I can just about guarantee you won’t find one online. For example, if you find a one foot tall image on your screen (about 72 ppi) if you blow it up to, just four feet tall, the resolution will end up about sixteen, seventeen ppi. Those are pretty big, jaggedy pixels. If you want a five, six foot image, well, as they say, if you do the math, you can pretty much determine that you won’t be happy with the results.

I can suggest that you, perhaps, find a good, high resolution, existing commercial print of the character, and scan it yourself at the highest resolution you can. They play around with the printing to see how large you can blow it up with out too much pixelization.

If you do all this process yourself, you are well withing the legal limits of the copyright laws. You just can’t pay someone else to create this copy.

Another way to get this done if you can find a good picture is to project the picture onto the wall and trace the outline lightly with a pencil and then paint the picture. This will be just like painting in a coloring book. Once you are done painting, use an eraser to take away the pencil lines. You may be able to borrow someones projector or you can purchase an inexpensive one from a craft store like Micheal’s. Now, the only problem with projecting the picture is that you will likely only be able to project a portion of the picture at a time. I would suggest when it comes to tracing the outline, to just pick the major lines needed to get the image on the wall. Smaller details you should be able to add freehand. Check around with your friends who are into crafts and you may find one who already had a projector that you can borrow. It’s worth a try! Hope you’re able to find an easy way to do this, I know your son will love the personal touch it gives to his room.

Why not contact Cartoon Network, many companies are happy to send out promotional material or point you in the right direction. (This link might not be the best way to contact them.)
